Saturday I went in Labrador with my aunt/uncle/cousins/mom's boyfriend. We stopped at Pinware river... We also went to Red Bay's historic site and went up the lighthouse at Point Amour. It was a nice day! I hadn't been in Red Bay in years... And the lighthouse well a few years ago, and had trouble going up to the light. But it made it easier for me this time around to go all the way up, because I knew exactly what to expect! Yesterday I went on the sea with J. & M. We spent a few hours watching the whales. There were only 2 though... A bigger one and a smaller one, I liked imagining it was a mom and 2 year old baby. They were feeding, on capelin fish and plankton. It was neat, they were REALLY near... Sometimes even passing under the boat!!!! Later on, we saw my aunt/uncle/cousins were back from their promenade to Old Fort so we went with the boat near my mom's home to pick them up! They really enjoyed the 45 minutes out to sea. They'd never seen whales that close. I took lots of pics. It was my first time really using my new camera and I loved how it worked! Some pics will be on my Photoblog over the next few days, the first being "Baleine en trois temps." And all of them soon in my album.
Mom has been in Blanc-Sablon for about 30 years. Since then, from her family, not many have come for a visit: one of her sisters, her mom and one of her nieces. But this year, she's lucky! We're getting visitors!!! One of my aunt's and her husband (one of my uncle's), along with two of my cousins' are coming for a week! They arrive tomorrow! It's exciting. She's one of my favourite aunts. I can't wait for them to experience our beautiful area. And it seems Mother Nature is cooperating, the forecast calls for sun/clouds starting Friday, while we've had rain/fog for the past days!!!
MY NEW CAMERA!!! Here's one of the first pics I took... I like the camera! Though it'll take a bit of time to get used to it...!
Mom's a pretty neat person, friendly, gives lots, attentive. But she has one habit I wish she'd kick... Smoking cigarettes. At break, when Happy is at her house (because in my new office I can't bring Happy), I go visit. I'm there 10 minutes, either at 10h or at 15h. And it seems more and more often mom decides to light up for her cigarette break as I am there. GREAT! FAB! No, not 10 minutes before, or 10 minutes after, right while I'm there. Sure, it's her house, she can do as she pleases. But as I see it, what's waiting 10 minutes until I've left?! I enjoy going to visit her on my break, chatting, seeing what she's up to, telling her about my day. But not while she's smoking... And on the weather front... The fog that has been around for the past 5 days has lifted, only to make room for rain. The good thing about that is that the plane finally landed today, and hopefully is carrying mail, and hopefully that includes my new camera!
Last night's fire was good! I got there at just about midnight, they'd just lit the fire. There was a small fireworks display on. The weather wasn't so nice, mist/fog, but the fire's heat was more than enough to keep us warm! I chatted with J.&M. and their friends, some people from work, old friends I hadn't seen in a long time... I was very responsible, just having a couple of beers, as I had the car with me. Lots of people were passed being drunk! Some people on the beach near the waves... The fire getting smaller and smaller... Today mom invited lots of people over for a brunch at her house. Too bad it's rainy outside. Would have been a nice outdoor event! And yay! Today is a day off!! Fire Flames, the pic on my Photoblog!
I wonder why... People I am in contact with here, friends, are old. Like the parents of the people I used to hang out with when I was in high school. Yet, there are many people my age around, people that I used to hang out with before. But my two best friends were my link to these people. And they aren't here anymore. So the dynamics are all different. After Spain, for my next trip, I thought about going to Pero and hike the Saltankay route to Machu Picchu. Except it's not too good at the time of the year I'd go, November/December or maybe February. So I'm thinking maybe Iceland! I looked up tickets and it's 950$ Montreal-Reykjavik in November! Would be great to see the land of Sigur Ros! I just went to the beach, where people were busy putting together the bonfire for the St-Jean... It'll be lit tomorrow late night, as the 24th arrives. It's a really foggy day. Eerie feel... An old boat that will be burnt...
This morning I went to Labrador for a bit of shopping... I bought some plain white tees, and ironed on a design I made and printed out on transfer paper... For my mom's St-Jean Baptiste brunch. She invited tons of people over on the 24th to eat/chat/listen to music/play games. The tees will be prizes. But by doing that I missed out on a boat ride with M. and J.! They called me to come along, but I was not home...! Apparently they saw many whales. The whales have arrived in the region, along with the capelin fish. So instead, I went to the Coast Fest 2008 opening ceremony. Held in front of the municipal hall in Blanc-Sablon, the ceremony attracted about 50 people. The guest of honor was Mr Graham Fraser, Canada's Commissioner of Official Languages. His speech was interesting. All my pics are here... Here's one of crowd/setup. I also saw the Enquêtes crew around some more, they interviewed an old man near M. and J.'s place and were filming near the radio station. Wonder until when they are in town! Don't know what I'll do tonight...
The other day at work I listened to the streaming version of the new Sigur Ros CD, it is amazing indeed, especially the longer into listening the CD you get... It builds up nicely. Today I bought the digital download + physical CD pack. I can't wait to get home, download the tunes, put them on my iPod, dock the iPod and listen to the album fully, so loud I can hear it throughout the house. It seems my first mistake wasn't such a mistake afterall. I got in touch with all the partners, got the letter signed by all, and it's on its way out to its recipients!! It's fab! I will sleep nicely tonight, after the feeling of a job well done. It looks good too! With all 9 organizations' logos up-top and 9 signatures at the bottom! When I was out getting signatures for my letter, I saw the journalist Alain Gravel with a film crew. From reading his blog, he was up North last week. And today here... At my work this morning, at the S.Q. this afternoon... Wonder what they are working on and when it will air!!
My mom and I moved some older furniture she didn't need in her home anymore, a desk and a nightstand with two drawers. I put them in my crafts room. I am really doing more and more stuff, so I needed more space! Can't wait to have it all arranged and ready to go! Too bad the cold Winter nights have gone... I haven't yet gone to Spain (September), but I am already looking into my next trip...! I so want to hike to Machu Picchu!!! Maybe that'll be it... When? Don't know. With whom? No idea. But yea, would be amazing. I love evenings after a work day... A nice dinner... Music on (currently Sigur Ros Hvarf/Heim, waiting for the new CD next week)... Bath... PJ... And so I go, with the lovely Starálfur playing...
I think I've just made my first mistake as Community Organizer... I didn't keep my partners close enough in what I am doing... This past week one of the things I have done is preparing a letter to send out in the name of my employer and partner organizations. I had to wait for my superior to approve the letter. Now today I got the OK, I realize the partners will be tough to get a hold of! So, I should have contacted them all last week to say this week I'd be ready with the letter! Oh well. Now, fingers crossed, it'll all work out anyways!
I checked my finances, and with reorganizing stuff around, I can afford it! I'm ordering a new camera as we speak! YOUPPI! When I want something, I get it!!!!
As reported a few months ago in this post, Happy contributed to scratching the lens on my lovely Canon G7 camera. Now, whenever the sun is hitting at a certain angle, there is a mark on the pic. And it's just plain annoying. I'm thinking about getting a new camera. Sure I love my G7, it's small, portable, yet pretty powerful. But I am envisaging getting a SLR, this one. Especially since it seems like an amazing deal, the extra lens for such a little price difference of 169$ (697$ 18-55mm lens, 866$ 18-55mm + 75-300mm). Plus I'd be able to shoot in RAW, something I can't do with my G7. And I'm going to Spain soon, would be fab to use a new camera there! But do I have the budget? Would be almost 1000$ with taxes?! Alas, I don't think that's possible... We'll see...
But yet I had three jobs: gardener, seamstress and travel agent! I started outside this morning, preparing a cute mini 3 rows garden outside my living room window. I planted my kale and some lettuce there. Simple start. And hope it grows! Then inside this afternoon I sewed a roman blind for one of my bedroom windows. Since coming back from holiday I put new sheer curtains on both windows, but outside there's a street lamp and more light comes in through that one window. So I decided to make a special blind for it! I like the finish product...! Opened... Closed... And finally I booked new plane tickets with British Airways after Zoom canceled our original flight and booked us on other dates that really didn't fit our plans! That'll teach them! Now that we're with BA we should not have any problems!!
I feel like having a nice Stella on a terrace in Montreal! I'm so going to ask the depanneur to order some in for me! I won't have Montreal, but I'll have Stella...! Today plans for our trip to Spain were compromised! The plane company, Zoom, called to let us know they weren't flying anymore on the dates we'd booked, and they'd changed our flight for another day. They didn't care about it screwing up the whole plans, including our connecting flight with a different company! So yea, I explored different options... Either changing the other plans to fit the new Zoom dates or getting a refund and buying a tick with another airline. I'll finalize the new plans tomorrow. Last night I went to eat dinner at J. & M.'s place, and my best childhood friend C. was there too, for a short holiday! It was nice seeing her again. Tonight she went to eat at my neighbour's, so she dropped by my place. We went to get some earth together, for my garden. She's so funny to be around, always having a good time. I hadn't seen her in a long time!!!
